SPATIAL ITERATIONS

“Spatial iterations” is a planimetric and artistic record that shows different uses and exchanges that take place in the domestic space of a remote house in the small town of Máfil, southern Chile. Here the particular daily life of the place is revealed; the excessive use of the kitchen, the constant indoor/outdoor exchanges and the prevailing semi-darkness –in response to the inclement weather– are some of its singularities. At the same time, an artistic record that completes what the architectural survey could not show is developed; a second “abstract” dimension where the typical moisture textures of a southern house are presented, a sample of layers of paintings and light leaks that contrast with the inner gloom. Only in this manner the way of living, atmosphere and events in a context of confinement are fully understood in times of COVID19.

The planimetry, in addition to showing the human flows/exchanges in the house and revealing a particular spatiality (product of planimetric objectivity), supports a series of symbols in red, which connect with the artistic/abstract register. Thus, circles show the appearance of external light cracks, arrows indicate the plans of moisture textures and angles show photographic shots.

“Minimal Cartographies” is an ongoing project that seeks to examine the space of the house through a process of auto ethnography in the context of confinement in the small town of Máfil, southern Chile. It is proposed to think of the house as a deteriorating body, a family member whose structural transformations make up a symbolic support. In this way, the work draws visual maps that record these signs in the context of confinement in my birth house.
